A SCANNER, LIGHTLY

Braved the Shanghai heat and the throng of the crowd today to go down to the Xiu Jia Hui computer mall to pick up a scanner today.

I picked up a Canon LiDE 500F, which has a few more film/negative scanning features than I need in the forseeable future, but it has the image & OCR scanning that I was looking for, plus a small footprint on my desktop when it's mounted in its vertical stand.

All of the features on the scanner are working fine with MacOS10.4, although the Canon software + 3rd party PhotoStudio that it comes bundled with are a little bit on the clunky side visually.  Functionality, however is there, so I have another input mechanism for my system.

...now if only I could get that DigiDesign M-Box back up an running!

BLOGGING WIDGET > GOOGLE READER

With Google Reader embedded in my personal Homepage I've been enabled to retrieve personal blog entries that I am NOT able to access via linguisticfx.blogspot.com

This seems to be a 'regional' issue, which I assume has to do with the treatment and regulation of blogging in the Eastern world.

There still seems to be a time delay between the moment when I publish a post via the widget, and subsequent availability/feed via Google Reader.

AUTOMATOR BATCH SCRIPT

Something's up with my Automator Batch Script (Applescript) that runs my Automator script to send off lots of individual mp3 files to my Gmail accounts.  Instead, I've been pressing the 'Run' (script) button in Automator to send off each file, which has resulted in hundreds of mouse presses today.

The lack of batch script has forced me into ambidextrity - I'm using both hands to alleviate muscle/bone strain.

I seem to have defeated the purpose of batch scripting - back to the drawing board!

LinguisticFX Parallelog

Turning the blogging experience into a completely inefficient enterprise is not really what I had in mind. At each turn, there seems to be some sort of in terms of either publishing or access...at least using this system.

I'm a little bit worried that eventually all of these 'notes to self' will come flooding back to me and I'll see exactly how much internal monologue has been let loose on the web?

INTEGRATED GOOGLE TOOLS?

In the process of establishing this parallel line of commentary on the actual nature of beta testing some of these products, I've recently hit a few setbacks, and some forward movement.

1. Blogger's beta widget for Apple Dashboard completely erased itself?  This is the kind of crash that seems to accompany a widget that has errant code, although I can't confirm this.

2. One positive example of 'feedback' from Google is that within 48 hours of my reporting that inserting Google AdSense code into Googlepages would create a fatal 'freeze' on page editing, I received an email from Google stating that the AdSense code is now compatible, and all of my tests since then have been positive - no problems.

3. In attempting to try out yet another new Google tool - Google Sitemap, I've noticed that this is another piece of Google software that doesn't seem to be designed to integrate with Googlepages.  In fact, to activate Sitemap, Google require that you either insert a META tag into the header of your HTML (not possible on Googlepages?), or that you upload an individual HTML file/name to your site that Google autogenerates for you... again, not possible in Googlepages as far as I can tell.

So, in terms of the company with the 'unique DNA,' I have to wonder if there's one Google DNA, or if there are a multitude of them.  Possibly I'm underestimating their ability to integrate their tools post-design, but I have to wonder how this will effect the end user experience.

More importantly, I still can't get these Blogger feeds through the 'usual' RSS channels here in China unless I feed them through a proxy channel such as Google's personalized Homepage (and their Beta Reader).
